THE EMPLOYER WILL BE SURPLUSING A LARGE NUMBER OF OPSEU MEMBERS ON THIS DAY. NONE OF THE LOCAL PRESIDENTS ARE AWARE WHO WILL BE SURPLUSED UNTIL THAT DAY.
ENSURE YOU KNOW YOUR RIGHTS IF YOU’VE BEEN TOLD YOUR POSITION IS BEING SURPLUSED.
ONCE YOU’VE RECEIVED YOUR “PINK SLIP”, YOU WILL HAVE THE OPTION OF BEING RE-DEPLOYED WHICH MEANS OVER THE NEXT 6 MONTHS THE EMPLOYER WILL SEARCH FOR A POSITION IN YOUR CLASSIFICATION IN YOUR MINISTRY. YOU MUST STILL COME TO WORK IF YOU CHOOSE REDEPLOYMENT. AT THE 5TH MONTH THEY WILL BEGIN TO LOOK FOR PEOPLE TO “BUMP” MEANING THOSE WHO HAVE LESS SENIORITY THAN YOU AND ARE FROM THE SAME CLASSIFICATION. IF THEY CANNOT FIND YOU A POSITION IN YOUR MINISTRY, THEY WILL THEN LOOK AT OTHER MINISTRIES.
IF YOU ARE NEAR FACTOR 80 (AGE PLUS YEARS OF SERVICE MUST ADD UP TO 80) YOU MAY CHOOSE TO TAKE YOUR RETIREMENT. IF YOU ARE CLOSE TO FACTOR 80 (WITHIN 2 YEARS) YOU MAY CHOOSE TO BRIDGE YOUR PENSION MONIES AND RETIRE.
IF YOU DO NOT CHOOSE TO BE REDEPLOYED, YOU MAY COLLECT YOUR REGULAR PAY FOR THE NEXT 6 MONTHS, BUT AFTER THAT YOU HAVE NO MORE INCOME FROM THE GOVERNMENT.
